Our History

Kent Rosenblum, a veterinarian, started winemaking in the basement of his San Francisco East Bay home.  This newfound hobby transformed into a passion that could not be ignored and became his new career path.

1978

Tasting Room

Rosenblum Cellars’ first tasting room was opened in Alameda, CA working out of a factory warehouse in an area known more for its docks and shipyards than for winemaking. Kent & his crew looked more like longshoreman than winemakers, but let the wine speak for itself. Rosenblum became one of the first urban wineries in California and a popular tourist destination.

1980s

Single Vineyard Labels

Rosenblum launched its first series of Single Vineyard labels to recognize the dedication of previously underappreciated vineyard growers and to the celebrate the unique sense of place the wine was grown. Kent chose to explore some of the unrecognized grape-growing areas of Northern California and met families who had been growing grapes for generations; dedicated growers passionate about their vineyards who worked tirelessly to grow the best grapes possible from old vines their families had planted.

1991

ZAP

Kent became a founding member of Zinfandel Advocates and Producers (ZAP), an organization dedicated to promoting Zinfandel for its uniqueness in nature and quality of its fruit that allow it to be drinkable and enjoyable as a young wine, but also the ability to age gracefully.

This urban wine oasis showcases Rosenblums’ commitment to excellent wines and serves an even larger population of tourists and community members in its new home by the Bay. Easily accessible to visit and right next to the Oakland Ferry Terminal, the tasting room is open Tuesday through Sunday 12 – 8 pm.

The King of Zin

The Legacy of Kent Rosenblum, “The King of Zin,” lives on in his bold, distinctive style of Zinfandels and red blends that put his wines on the map, as well as his commitment to recognizing California’s historic vineyards.  From single vineyards in Sonoma and Alexander Valley to strictly selected regional blends, Rosenblum Cellars has made more than 50 Zinfandels earning 90 or more points.  Its a tradition that lives on at Rosenblum Cellars today and helps inspire a new generation of winemakers.

Our Love Letter to Zinfandel

Dear Zinfandel,

I'm writing to you not with the flourish of a wine connoisseur, but with the simple joy of someone who cherishes your presence. You are not just a wine; you are a companion through the seasons, a celebration in a glass, and a whisper of the California sun that ripened your grapes to perfection. And you had us at first sip.

You see, Zinfandel, you’ve never been about pretense. In a world where wine can be shrouded in snobbery, you stand out with your bold, unapologetic fruitiness. You’re the friend who brings warmth to a chilly evening and adds sparkle to a summer night. Like the last rays of a sunset, your ruby red hue promises the thrill of the night ahead.

From the Gold Rush to the modern table, you've been a part of American history, a true pioneer among vines. Each sip is a dive into a basket of ripe berries – blackberries, raspberries, cherries – dancing together in natural sweetness and spice, with a hint of pepper that delights and surprises.

You're the life of the party without trying too hard. Equally at home at a backyard BBQ or an elegant dinner, you pair perfectly with life’s simple pleasures – pizza, a juicy burger, or dark chocolate. But it's not just about taste; it's the moments you create, the toasts, the laughter, the memories.

You remain a classic in a world chasing the new and novel. Timeless, a testament to tradition, always ready to adapt and surprise. You open the door of possibility. Enthusiasts who cherish your bold character can also revel in the nuanced elegance of Syrah, the robust depth of Alicante Bouschet, and the crisp freshness of Viognier. Your vibrant tapestry of flavors allows us to appreciate and delight in your peers.

So, here's to you, Zinfandel – the joy, comfort, and brightness you bring. You are a reminder to savor the simple things and to share that happiness with others.

Yours truly,
Rosenblum Cellars
