This historical location, which was home to the third California Catholic mission in southern Monterey, produced wine for the first time in 1842. The area boasts diverse soil types with cooling breezes and sea fog that provide moderate weather fluctuations. The combination of warm days and cool nights results in longer growing season for grapes to develop rich varietal character while retaining acidity. This Syrah has a punch of fruit, black currant, acai berry, and black fruit jam. Its concentrated tannins and peppery notes provide the perfect combination for lingering finish.
San Bernabe, Monterey County
We all know somebody who lives “on the Peninsula” or “vacations in Monterey.” Well, what they don’t tell you is that it’s cold as #%&$ and windier than a tornado most days in the area below Santa Clara and Watsonville. These conditions, however, are excellent for long hang-times and evening-keeled ripening in grape growing. That’s why, in 1983, its diverse landscape of valleys, hills, and coastal plains was culled together into boundaries, forming the Monterey AVA, best known for its cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc wines. The scenic beauty of Monterey Bay further enhances the allure of this dynamic wine region.
